Shalya Tantra (Surgery)
Preserving classical Ayurvedic surgery and para-surgical techniques, integrated with contemporary surgical principles to train competent surgical practitioners.
Surgical Specialty in Ayurveda
Shalya Tantra is the surgical branch of Ayurveda that deals with operative and para-surgical procedures. The department traces its roots to the teachings of Acharya Sushruta, who is regarded as the Father of Surgery.
Students are trained in surgical principles, wound management, trauma care, anorectal disorders, urinary disorders, and various minor and major surgical procedures. Special emphasis is given to Ksharasutra therapy, Agnikarma, Raktamokshana, and other traditional Ayurvedic surgical techniques.
The department is equipped with operation theatres, surgical wards, diagnostic facilities, and demonstration units that provide practical clinical exposure. Students gain experience in pre-operative, operative, and post-operative patient management. The department plays a significant role in preparing competent Ayurvedic surgeons capable of delivering quality patient care.
Key Para-Surgical & Surgical Methods
Specialized classical techniques are taught and performed in regular para-surgical units:
Ksharasutra Therapy
Minimal-invasive medicated seton therapy for anorectal conditions like fistulae, piles, and fissures
Agnikarma (Cauterization)
Controlled heat-transfer therapy using specialized metallic probes (Shalaka) for chronic pain relief
Raktamokshana
Traditional therapeutic blood-letting using leeches (Jalaukavacharana) or venesection
OT & Ward Facilities
The surgical training is anchored around standard operative and ward units:
Operation Theatres
Equipped for minor and major surgical operations, ensuring sterile conditions and advanced monitors.
Surgical Wards
Comprehensive pre-operative preparation and dedicated post-operative recovery monitoring.
Demonstration Units
Simulated surgical training, model suturing, and instrument identification setups.
Students actively rotate through general surgery, orthopedics, and wound dressing/burns care units to master diagnosis, suturing, plastering, and emergency trauma protocols.
