Dravyaguna Vigyan
Exploring Ayurvedic pharmacology, pharmacognosy, and herbal medicine to bridge ancient phytotherapy with modern research and clinical applications.
Science of Ayurvedic Pharmacology
Dravyaguna Vigyan is the science of medicinal plants and natural substances used in Ayurveda. The department focuses on the identification, classification, pharmacological properties, therapeutic actions, and clinical applications of herbal medicines.
Students gain knowledge about the cultivation, collection, preservation, and utilization of medicinal plants through classroom teaching, practical sessions, and field visits. The department maintains a medicinal plant garden where students can observe and study various herbs used in Ayurvedic formulations.
The department emphasizes the importance of herbal medicine in preventive and curative healthcare. Research activities are encouraged to explore the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants and validate traditional knowledge through scientific methods. Dravyaguna Vigyan serves as a bridge between traditional herbal wisdom and modern scientific research, contributing significantly to the advancement of Ayurvedic medicine.
Key Pharmacological Properties
Understanding natural drugs relies on specific properties defined by Ayurvedic pharmacology:
Rasa (Taste)
The primary organoleptic perception (6 tastes) that influences physiological response
Virya & Vipaka
Virya (potency/thermal action) and Vipaka (post-digestive effect) determining drug behavior
Prabhava (Specific Action)
The unique, inexplicable clinical potency of a herb beyond chemical composition
Infrastructure & Live Learning
Practical cultivation, collection, and analytical verification are supported by dedicated facilities:
Medicinal Plant Garden
A wide variety of live herbal species representing various Ayurvedic categories.
Pharmacognosy Lab
Equipped for microscopic and macroscopic testing, quality control, and drug validation.
Herbarium Museum
Catalogued collection of preserved plant species and raw drug samples for research.
Through field visits, herb collection drives, and chemical-microscopic checks, students learn to authenticate genuine medicinal herbs and prevent raw drug adulteration.
